Microsoft Sharepoint is one of the fastest growing solutions in the Microsoft portfolio of products. One of the main reasons for this growth is that Sharepoint can address many different needs for organisations of all sizes, small, medium and large. In essence, Sharepoint is a secure collaborative environment (Intranet), where users can access and share the most current and up to date information within the organisation. It is however a quantum shift away from the standard File/Folder structure that user’s have become accustomed to for many years, and as such great care must be taken in how users are introduced to this new environment. While many people may have already heard about Microsoft SharePoint, there is a great deal of confusion as to what it actually does. Part of this confusion is the fact that there are two versions, but effectively three flavors' of this product. The first version, WSS (Windows SharePoint Services), you will be happy to hear is ‘FREE’, and comes as a standard component of Windows Server 2003/2008. The second version, MOSS (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server), comes in two distinct flavors', Standard and Enterprise. Both these versions require the purchase of a ‘Server License’ and an appropriate CAL (Client Access License) for each user within your organisation, depending on what features best meet your needs in the standard or enterprise version.
A considerable amount of thought needs to be put into how you intend to deploy SharePoint within your organisation, and care should be taken to choose the right partner to help with this deployment.
